Choice Is the Secret Ingredient

Hey Reader,

Here’s something I learned after years in the classroom and at the kitchen table: kids crave ownership, just like we do.

When kids feel like learning is something being done with them instead of to them, their motivation skyrockets.

Read that again... When kids feel like learning is something being done with them instead of to them, their motivation skyrockets.

But here’s the catch: if we simply ask, “So…what do you want to do today?”
We get one of two responses:

🌀 Blank stares
🤪 Ideas involving Minecraft, snacks, and zero pencils in sight

Choice works best when it’s guided.

Try one of these “bounded choice” phrases this week 👇

🐝 For reading or writing:

“Would you rather write a paragraph or draw a comic about what we read?”
“Do you want to listen to this story or read it out loud together?”

🐝 For science or history:

“Should we watch a short video or do a simple hands-on experiment?”
“Would you like to learn about this by reading or by building a mini model?”

🐝 For math:

“Do you want to solve these problems on paper or use blocks to show your work?”
“Would you like me to read the word problems, or do you want to read them yourself?”

Guided choices give kids freedom within structure, and that’s where engagement thrives.

It’s not about letting go of teaching; it’s about inviting kids into the process.

“Where could I offer my kids more meaningful choices this week, not to make things easier, but to help them feel trusted and capable?”
