This is important to engagement

Hey Reader,

Your child tells you they liked the activity better when you worked beside them.

Or they mention that everyone talking at once made it hard to think.

You hear it. You consider it. Then the day keeps moving.

By the next morning, you may have made a thoughtful decision based on that conversation, but your child doesn’t necessarily know their feedback was part of it.

Sometimes the useful next step is making that connection visible.

Let your children see how their voices help shape your homeschool.

This doesn’t mean every preference becomes a new rule.

It means you can tell them what you understood and what you’ve decided to do with it.

Action Step: Explain one homeschool decision and how something your kids shared impacted it.

If you already have useful feedback, you don’t need to hold another discussion or ask for more.

You might say, “You told me it was hard to think while everyone was talking. We’ll take turns sharing our ideas this morning.”

Or, “You liked having me beside you when you started. I can sit with you for the first few minutes today.”

The decision can also be to keep something.

“You said drawing the scene helped you remember the story. We can keep that as one way for you to share what you understood.”

And sometimes you’ll need to explain a limit.

“You’d like to do the messy experiment today. We don’t have enough time to set it up and clean afterward, so we’re keeping today’s plan.”

You can respect their input without promising what you can’t provide.

With several children, one request may not fit everyone. You’re allowed to weigh the needs of the whole family. Listening gives you more information for that decision; it doesn’t remove your responsibility to make it.

If this week brought a helpful idea from your child, celebrate that contribution. If it brought a preference you couldn’t accommodate, you can still appreciate knowing more about their experience.

You’re building something more useful than a homeschool where everyone gets their first choice.

You’re building a way to talk, consider, decide, and adjust together.

That belongs in a quality education too.

Cheering you on,
