Hey Reader! Sometimes, as homeschool teachers, we want to keep moving forward. Thereās a new activity or a clever seasonal idea ready to go. You probably even know where the scissors are⦠ā¦But your kids, they want to play Mouse Trap for the 10th time this week. There can be a tiny homeschool-mom alarm that goes off here. Shouldnāt we be moving on? Offering something new? Making the most of the season? Sometimes, moving on is the way to go. But consider how A familiar favorite can be a very good use of your time together. Think about what might happen when everyone already knows how the game works. You can settle into playing sooner. One kid might try a different strategy. Another might finally feel comfortable explaining a move. Thereās room for the shared joke that apparently gets funnier every single time. You get to be part of that, too. You arenāt spending the whole experience explaining instructions or trying to persuade everyone that this will be fun. As the holiday season gets busier, itās easy to let a calendar full of possibilities push aside the things your family already enjoys. Even a lovely idea takes time and energy to introduce. Familiar experiences deserve a place in your homeschool alongside new discoveries. Maybe learning has felt a little strained lately. Returning to something you enjoy together can give you a comfortable place to reconnect. If things are already going well, repeating a favorite lets you enjoy that good fit again. You donāt need to improve the experience before you repeat it. The game can stay a game. A favorite read-aloud can stay a story you cuddle up and enjoy. You can leave the follow-up project for another time, or skip it entirely. Try this today: repeat one familiar experience your family enjoys, without adding an extra task to make it count. While youāre there, you may notice the learning quite naturally: remembering the rules, working through a disagreement, anticipating a story, or trying again after a disappointing turn. Thereās also the pleasure of knowing, āThis is something we like doing together.ā Thatās worth celebrating. Youāve found something that fits the people in your homeschool. When I share holiday learning ideas, I want you to have useful possibilities to choose from. Your family gets to decide which ones youāll try and when returning to a family favorite is the way to go. Thereās no wrong way to homeschool. Youāre allowed to make room for a good thing twice. (or 10 times!) Christy's Corner š Whatās one familiar experience your family would happily repeat?
