🐝What bumps in your homeschool journey actually mean

Hey Reader,

You chose the curriculum. You made the schedule. You signed up for the co-op, created the routine, or decided this would be the year you finally tried something different.

Then real life arrived.

Someone complained. A lesson took twice as long as expected. The beautiful schedule fell apart before lunch. Suddenly, you’re wondering whether you made the wrong decision.

That thought can feel especially convincing when you worked hard to make a thoughtful choice in the first place.

But a bumpy start does not automatically mean you chose wrong.

It may mean the curriculum truly isn’t a good fit. It may mean your schedule needs adjusting. It may also mean everyone is still getting used to something new.

You do not need to know which one it is today.

Before you change the plan, give yourself permission to pause and notice what is actually happening.

Not what you're afraid might happen.

Not what another homeschool family said happened to them.

Not what the curriculum company promised would happen.

What is happening in your family?

Try this today

Choose one decision you have been questioning and finish these two sentences:

• I am wondering if we should change __________.

• One thing I have actually noticed is __________.

Keep the second sentence factual and specific.

“My child sighed before math” is an observation.

“My child hates this curriculum, and it will never work” is a conclusion.

There may eventually be a good reason to make a change, but you will make a more useful decision when you begin with what you can see.

Then, before you move on, name one thing that went well today. It can be small. Maybe your child asked a good question, everyone started without an argument, or you wisely shortened a lesson.

That counts as evidence too.

You are not ignoring problems when you notice what is working. You are giving yourself a fuller and more accurate picture of your homeschool.
