What did you do today? âŚNothing
|
A classic conversation between parents and kids all over the world: Mom - âWhat did you do at school today, sweetheart?â Child - Nothing đđđ Well Reader, as homeschool moms we have the same conversation - but often with our brains! đ§ âWhat did we do today?.. I mean the dog threw up, Aunt Sally called, and everyone wanted an extra snack. UGG, we didnât get history done again. Weâre getting behind because nothing is getting done!â đ§ Because the assignments you planned didnât get finished, your brain translates the whole day into: đ§ âWe did nothing.â Before you decide to agree with your beautiful brain, I want you to try something different. Make a factual list of what actually happened. Not what subject it belongs to. Not whether it was educational enough. Not whether you could document it for your homeschool records. Just what your kids actually did. Maybe one child figured out how to repair something that broke. Maybe another read instructions because they wanted to make something. Maybe siblings negotiated whose turn came next. Maybe your child helped you plan what still needed to happen before leaving the house. Maybe absolutely none of those things happened in your house today. Thatâs okay too. The point isnât to prove every chaotic day was secretly an amazing homeschool day. Itâs to stop deciding the day had no value before youâve even looked at the evidence. Completed assignments are one way to see learning. They arenât the only way. So today, before you say âwe didnât get anything done,â replace that sentence with: âHereâs what actually happened.â You may still decide tomorrow needs more structure. You may decide thereâs an assignment worth returning to. Or you may realize the day held more thinking, problem-solving, conversation, independence, and connection than you gave it credit for. You donât need to change the day. Just look at it honestly before you grade it. Christy's Corner đ If you want to journal about this, ask yourself: What did my kids actually do today, before I decided whether it counted? Hit reply and tell me one thing you almost overlooked. |
