❓What matters most for your family right now?

Hey Reader,

There are many ways to homeschool.

You can use a boxed curriculum, unit studies, online classes, living books, hands-on projects, workbooks, nature study, morning baskets, afternoon baskets, and probably a basket for organizing all the other baskets.

Having a bagillion options can feel reassuring at first.

Then you try to choose one. Panic sets in!

Before choosing the lesson, curriculum, project, or printable, it helps to pause and ask:

What matters most for our family right now?

  • Maybe you’re trying to build more connection.
  • Maybe one of your children needs greater confidence.
  • Maybe your family needs a calmer rhythm after a particularly busy or difficult season.
  • Maybe you’re focusing on stronger foundational skills.
  • Maybe you want to create more room for curiosity.
  • Maybe you’re helping a child become more independent.
  • Or maybe what matters most is giving a child the time and space they need without making every day feel like a race.

These goals are very different.

And they lead you toward very different homeschool choices.

A beautiful, academically rigorous curriculum might be excellent, but it may not support the calmer rhythm your family needs right now.

A creative project might look wonderful, but it may require more energy and preparation than you currently have.

A simple worksheet might not be especially exciting, but it could be exactly what helps your child practice a skill independently and feel successful.

The question doesn’t have to be: Is this a good homeschool idea?

Plenty of homeschool ideas are good.

A more helpful question is: Does this support what our family needs right now?

That one small shift makes it easier to sort through the noise.

Instead of trying to find the very best reading program in the entire homeschool universe, you can look for the one that focuses on comprehension.

Instead of wondering whether every family should have a morning basket, you can decide whether one would create connection or just add another pile of *stuff* for everyone to ignore.

Instead of choosing a science curriculum because it has 365 daily experiments, you can ask whether your current goal is building knowledge, encouraging curiosity, or simply helping your child enjoy science again.

Once you know what you’re trying to support, ideas become easier to evaluate.

What matters most for your family right now?

More peace?

More confidence?

More connection?

More breathing room?

More curiosity?

You don’t need to find the best idea.

You need to know what you’re doing WITH that idea.

This is also where having support can make such a difference.

Sometimes it’s hard to identify what matters most when you’re in the middle of the lessons, laundry, decisions, questions, and someone asking for a snack five minutes after lunch.

A little outside perspective can help you find a clearer direction.

And clearer direction makes everyday choices feel lighter.
